On Sunday, January 6th, 2019, Technovation Cambodia, part of a global technology and entrepreneurship program for girls, kicked off its 2019 program at the Institute of Technology of Cambodia. This event attracted more than 350 students, parents, mentors, and representative from schools, tech companies, NGOs, and the Royal Government of Cambodia.

Technovation is a global technology entrepreneurship competition for girls ages 10 to 18.  The program challenges girls all over the world to identify community problems, learn basic computer programming skills, write business plans, build a mobile application to address a community problem, and pitch their ideas.

Technovation Cambodia 2019 will be a 12-week, hands-on learning program for girls from public and private schools across Cambodia to learn essential 21st century skills in tech and entrepreneurship. In total, twelve finalist teams from around the world will be selected to attend the World Pitch event in San Francisco in August 2019.

The event started with opening remarks from H.E. Kim Sethany, Secretary of State of Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport, along with the welcoming remarks from Dr. Chunhieng Thavarith, Deputy Director of Institute of Technology of Cambodia, Mr. Jonathan Yap, Head of Regulatory & Corporate Affairs of Smart Axiata, and Ms. Kate Heuisler, Chief of Party of Development Innovations.

In her opening remark, H.E. Kim Sethany expressed the strong support from the Royal Government of Cambodia, “Technovation Program helps promote the role of gender equity and participation of girls in ICT. Technovation not only contributes to the ICT and Innovation but also help build the mindset of self-confidence of our young girls and develop soft-skills for their future work including teamwork, creativity, entrepreneurship, critical thinking, technological and problem solving skill.”

Speaking about the upcoming program, Mr. Jonathan Yap encouraged the girls, saying, “Dear participants, to us at Smart, Technovation encourages you to try new things, to innovate and be creative, to take risks, to realize the power of technology, and most of all to equip you with the right tools to reach your dreams.”

In 2018, Development Innovations, in partnership with the Technovation community, MoEYS, ITC, and participating schools, delivered this learning program for more than 180 girls in 44 teams from public and private schools across three provinces: Siem Reap, Battambang, and Phnom Penh.

“Technovation gives girls the skills they need to succeed and adapt, whatever field or career path they choose in the future. One participant from 2018, Rachana, told me she thought this program would be all about tech skills, and that she learned so many new skills related to teamwork and problem solving, as well. This combination of hard and soft skills training has been one of the secrets to the program’s success. Participants keep coming back to compete year after year, and some of them now join the program as mentors so they can inspire future generations,” said Kate Heuisler, Chief of Party for Development Innovations.

Dr. CHUNHIENG Thavarith, Deputy-Director of ITC, highlighted the importance of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematic) subjects and the high demand of human resources in engineering, technologies, and science for the development of Cambodia’s economy. He strongly believed that, “Through Technovation Program, there will be more girls’ participation in STEM subjects in the future”.

Since 2014, Technovation Cambodia has helped a total of 100 teams of more than 500 girls to compete in the program.

This year, the Technovation Cambodia 2019 program is implemented by the Institute of Technology of Cambodia, with support from the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport, USAID’s Development Innovations, and in coordination with participating schools around the country. Smart Axiata is the national sponsor.
