The 4th Cambodia Science & Engineering Festival (#CSEF2018) was another great success, attracting more than 25,000 people over the three days from March 1st to 3rd, 2018 at the beautiful Olympic Stadium, an iconic building from the 1960s designed by renowned Cambodian architect Van Molyvann. The festival participants enjoyed action-packed events, hands-on booths to test technologies like the Mini Maker Faire run by our partners from Arc Hub, science experiments, exhibitions and showcases from USAID and the US Embassy, the British Embassy, NGOs, and local heroes in the tech scene.

This year, Development Innovations partnered with People in Need Cambodia, World Education Cambodia, Edemy, Technovation Cambodia, Aide et Action Cambodia, and Doy Doy to showcase their information and communications technology (ICT) tools. Specifically, our booths showcased a flood warning tool, a literacy assessment application, Edemy – a blended English language learning system, and two educational applications for teachers and students. You can learn more about the projects we have helped fund in our project portfolio.

We also used the Festival to learn more about our young audience. We conducted a survey to find out how young people were using social media (all identified that they were from 13 to 24 years old). Over 3 days we got 365 responses (52% are from girls/women) and the #1 social media used is still Facebook, follow by #2 Instagram, and #3 YouTube. See detailed results below.

We also wanted to know why they used social media? The top 3 answers were:

  1. Stay up-to-date with news and current events
  2. Share opinions
  3. Find funny or entertaining content

This was closely followed by share photos or videos, stay in touch with friends and families, meet new people, and because they want to be where their friends are.

We also had a short quiz designed to test participants’ basic understanding about ICTs in a fun way. 217 out of 365 responses (59%) passed this test! This means our youth are stepping up to learn about the latest technology trends and ready for the digital challenges ahead in Cambodia. The United States Ambassador event took our quiz when he stopped by the booth – and we are proud to say he scored 100%!
