On Sunday, April 29th, 2018, Technovation Cambodia ran the latest mini-pitch event, an event to bring together teams from across Phnom Penh to pitch their tech business projects to a panel of judges.  Thirty-seven all-girl teams between ages 10-18 pitched ideas to help promote the purchase of organic vegetables, narrow the gap between customers and service providers, connect young people to online science learning opportunities, help parents track daily activities of children, and help pregnant women connect to information to keep babies healthy, to name a few. Everyone had to pitch their business concept, and show screenshots about how their app would address the problem, and get it done in just four minutes.

The judges were from the Cambodian tech and business sectors, and all gave critical feedback to the teams after their presentations.  Judges included:

  • Ms. HENG Huy Eng |  IT & Website Director of Open Development Cambodia
  • Mr. BE Chantra | Tech and Startup Community Builder
  • Mr. EAR Uy | Co-founder of Sabay Osja Studio
  • Mr. KHENG Vantha | Managing Director of Biz Solution Co., Ltd
  • Mr. SOK Leap | Founder of System Experts
  • Mr. UY Vichet | Director of Express Market Solution

There were also a lot of parents and guardians in the audience. One mother praised the program, saying, “With Technovation program, my daughter has actively worked with her team and mentors to build their mobile application, business plan, and pitch. I am so proud of my daughter and her team. I can see that technology is fast growing these days, so everyone; not just boys, girls as well, need to learn the skills related to technology. I am a woman and I work in solar industry, so I want to encourage my daughter, and other girls to take part in technology field.”. We think getting the parents involved is essential to helping girls access tech learning opportunities in Cambodia, and helping ensure they stay engaged in the programs.

Congratulations to all the teams! The most important part of the Technovation program is the skills you learn. We are proud of all of the teams for their bravery and commitment.

During the event, Development Innovations introduced the #IAmRachana initiative, a social media based project to help promote girls in tech, and help attract more Cambodian girls to tech-based programs like Technovation. Follow the character #IAmRachana on Facebook and Twitter to see how she inspires girls to join these programs to be the tech creators of the future.

What Now?

All of the Technovation Cambodia teams finished the 12 week tech entrepreneurship curriculum developed by Technovation Global, and 44 teams submitted their applications to global judges last week. We are excited to hear the results from Technovation Global, and to see how the girls do at the National Pitch Event later this month. Stay tuned to Technovation Cambodia on Facebook, and you can watch the event live on May 20th from 8am!
